Chicago Red Stars to mark anniversary of 1999 Women’s World Cup

  July 12, 2009

The Chicago Red Stars will mark the 10th anniversary of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, considered a transformational event in the history of women’s sports, during Sunday’s 7 p.m. match with FC Gold Pride at Toyota Park.

Defender Brandi Chastain and goalie Briana Scurry, who played critical roles as Team USA beat China on penalty kicks in the July 10, 1999, final at a sold-out Rose Bowl, and teammate Tiffeny Milbrett will be honored during the match.

Chastain, who plays for the FC Gold Pride, is remembered best for stripping off her jersey after netting the decisive penalty kick in the final. The sports bra she revealed will be part of a World Cup memorabilia display at Toyota Park.
