Brandi Chastain landed in Los Angeles on Friday and quickly sent a text message to her sister-in-law.
The response was what she wanted to hear: FC Gold Pride, the Women’s Professional Soccer team based near her Bay Area home, had selected her in the draft going on at the same time in St. Louis.
“I took a big sigh of relief,“ Chastain says. “I was very happy that it happened and that it was over. Now we could get on to the real important stuff.“
Chastain and Briana Scurry were selected in a draft populated mostly by players who were in middle school when Scurry’s save and Chastain’s penalty kick decided the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, the biggest stage women’s soccer has seen.
Chastain, 40, has kept fit training for a marathon and has played for the WPSL’s California Storm. “I have a lot of room to grow as a player,“ she says.
