On this holiday weekend, Brandi and I were reminiscing about how much we enjoyed taking road trips with our parents when we were young girls. This was before cars became traveling entertainment centers! There were no cell phones, either. We were left to invent our own fun (you know many of the usual games, i.e. I Spy, spotting license plates from different states, etc.). The best times were when there was no “absolute” schedule that we had to adhere to. I recently took a road trip, just my oldest son and myself. We stopped at a Dairy Queen, marveled at the scenery, but mostly…. we talked. It was a nice break from all of the demands of our busy lives.
After sending Brandi some pictures from the trip, she thought of road trips of her own. Here is one she wanted to share…
Brandi:
I was traveling from California to Arizona, to visit my cousins. When we arrived at the desert in the middle of the night, at least it felt like the middle of the night, my mom had her feet hanging out the window. She liked to do this because we didn’t have air conditioning. My dad tricked her into bringing them back into the car because he said they had jumping snakes that were just waiting for some unsuspecting tourist to stick their toes out there! My mom disliked snakes, so she screamed and her feet were in the car in a nanosecond. It was hysterical. We all laughed! He then told her that he was kidding, but she wouldn’t put her feet back out there.

Both children and parents are busy these days. Spending time together in a car can provide a great opportunity to bond. Turn off the phones, video games, and movies. Explore and enjoy!
Peace,
