I grew up in Shillington, Pennsylvania, a small “blink and you’ll miss it” town once home to John Updike and Keith Haring. My mother was (and still is) a very creative person, making the ordinary extraordinary—from the way she served desert to the halloween costumes she sewed. As a child, I was fascinated by commercials and the opening sequences to television programs. All of those things, combined with an active imagination and a father who told me to choose something I really enjoyed doing for my career path, brought me to where I am today.
After graduating from college, I worked for Hallmark Cards where I had fun for 10 years. Leaving Kansas City in the late 80’s, I headed west in search of adventure, open spaces, and to start my career as a freelance illustrator. I have had the good fortune to work with many wonderful companies such as American Girl, Northland Publishing, Penguin Putnam, Klutz, Sonic, Idexx, Gamewright, Learning Resources among others.
An illustration I did of my son, Max, and a desire to change children’s eating habits sparked the idea of Max On Snax®, a program about a little boy just this side of five who enjoys making snacks. Max was the beginning of Beati Productions, a small entertainment company that creates happy things that rhyme, sing, and jump. This adventure has introduced me to many wonderful people.
In short, I like my job.
When I am not spending time with my children, Max and Alex, or working, I swim. My mother never learned how to swim, so she was determined that my sisters and I would take swimming lessons. I started swimming before I could walk and have been doing laps ever since.
