Type 2 diabetes used to be unheard of in children. This is the type of diabetes we used to see only in adults. This is the type of diabetes that is caused by poor lifestyle choices. In just a few short years, we’re seeing these numbers multiply in kids. This has become a national crisis, yet needs very personal attention. We cannot expect a change in behavior in our kids, unless we embrace these changes ourselves. As parents, we are the closest mentors that our kids have. Yes, it is true that kids will mimic adult behavior before they will listen to adult words!
We, at Brandi’s World, applaud the efforts of our nation’s 1st Lady, Michelle Obama, in encouraging kids to move. The key to saving our kids from a lifetime of chronic illness is amazingly simple. We need to provide them with better food choices and encourage them to become physically active. The entire family should share in healthy nutrition. Children eat what their parents eat. Choose foods that naturally have lots of color! Avoid chemicals or processed foods. Check labels in the supermarket. Become physically active. Go for a walk every day! Ride a bike! Engage in activities such as jumping rope, or hula hooping! It doesn’t matter how skillful you are. It matters that you are joining your kids in these activities.
If your child is already struggling with weight issues, don’t be afraid to seek help. Your pediatrician or a dietician is a good place to start. The most precious thing in your world is your child. The gift of healthy lifestyle choices is the most precious gift you could ever provide!
