Your skin covers everything in your body. Most people are surprised to learn that their skin is actually an organ.. just like your heart or lungs! Your skin protects your body, regulating it’s temperature, and allows us to have a sense of touch. New skin cells form all the time. They travel from the bottom layers of your skin all the way to the top, about every 2-4 weeks. The older cells at the top die and rise to the surface. When you look at your skin, you’re really looking at your dead skin cells! The outer part of the skin is called the epidermis.
The nerve endings in your skin lay deeper down, in the skin layer called the dermis. The nerves travel to your brain and tell you how things feel. This is how you know if something is hot, cold, soft, rough, or smooth. Your dermis is also home to the oil glands, called the sebaceous glands. They are working hard to produce your body’s own natural oil. This helps to keep your skin protected and also waterproof!
Stay tuned as we talk about some problems girls tend to have with their skin…. next topic….acne!

Does this mean if you dislocate or jam somethng that its actually the skin that hurts and not the joint?

Well, that’s actually 2 different questions. There are nerve endings in both the joint and the deeper layers of the skin. So, both areas can be painful when they are injured.
